Starting this week, Denver’s Civic Design Commission will cast twelve second-round public-realm proposals onto vacant walls and construction scrims at dusk, from Five Points to Globeville. Every team received the same three difficult sites: a hot bus transfer, a flood-prone underpass and a block where new housing meets old freight frontage.

The projections are for looking, not voting, the commission says, and feed response will not affect the scores. Visitors may leave notes at paper stations tied to particular places or record short accounts of how they use the sites. Nuri Alvear is still among the paid finalist teams, and the immaculate alternate Denver will have to meet an actual Denver street.

The Enceladus Survey Consortium will send crews and instruments down for days, not months, after choosing a mobile, short-stay landing architecture for its first human-supported science campaign. Fresh mapping showed the intended ice field shifting too fast for the fixed surface habitat proposed earlier. Before fracture forecasts close the window, the system will lift the crews and instruments back to an orbital service vehicle.

The choice makes the campaign more expensive but keeps its scheduled cargo launches. It also gives up on the colony timetable announced last year: the moon will not remain still long enough to support it.

At dusk, Nuri was testing the Civic Design Commission projection against the loading-bay wall: pale municipal trees climbing over old brick, a bench where the dead rail spur began. Their terminal chimed on the worktable. The Quiet Gallery’s decision had copied both addresses. Wren stood in her paint shirt with a rag wrapped around her splinted thumb while Ondine read the sentence twice: the gallery could retain the work in review with a contested-subject annotation, subject to artist approval.

“That is disgusting,” Nuri said, not looking away from the projected shade canopy. Ondine set her camera on the table. Wren had gone very still by the open freight door, where the warm dust from the street kept blowing in. “They think a label makes it clean,” Ondine said. Wren said, “They think you made something worth keeping.”

Ondine opened the reply field. Her fingers paused over the keys, then moved. “Withdraw the photograph,” she said into the gallery’s recording prompt. “Do not preserve her refusal as my wall text.” Wren looked at the message until it sent. She picked up her rag and walked past the projected trees without touching Ondine’s shoulder. Nuri turned the projection off before either of them asked.
