On Saturday morning, Denver Transit opened its fenced mural yard on 38th Avenue to registered wall painters. They have three days to work on the primed concrete and elevated seams intended for the six permanent panels. The site offers a low lift, a ground-access section, and a west-facing test wall exposed to the full afternoon glare.

Transit said the exercise is not an audition under another name. Staff will record how the paint holds on the surface and how crews manage the transit right-of-way. For artists used to sending in flattened mockups, the practical change is that the wall can respond before a selection is made.

From the worldBrighton Line Pulls Usable Short Steel From Demolition Scraptech · front-range · magnitude 0.27

At a Brighton salvage yard, a compact vision-and-grip line began sorting Saturday, pulling usable short steel from demolition scrap before the remainder goes to the mill. It handles the pieces large fabricators generally leave behind: bent angle, plate corners, rail brackets, and clean lengths too irregular for standard inventory.

Henshaw will accept the sorted material in weekly mixed lots if the trial holds. It is not exactly cheap steel, but the stock is traceable and measured, and it comes in sizes small shops can realistically carry home.

A patient blinded by degenerative retinal disease has regained functional central vision after Osaka Central Hospital implanted a living retinal graft grown from the patient’s own corrected cells, the hospital said Saturday. The surgical team reported that the graft connected with the optic pathways over eleven months; independent imaging teams confirmed the result.

The hospital warned that the procedure is still too difficult and expensive for broad use. Retinal clinics from São Paulo to Stockholm nevertheless began requesting the graft protocol within hours. Japan’s health ministry said it would call an accelerated review for a multi-center trial.

At 9:14 the 38th Avenue yard smelled of wet concrete and ozone from the night’s storm. Cass had his field speakers clipped under the viaduct, playing a low pulse against the traffic overhead, while Wren stood beneath the assigned wall with her thumb brace taped clean under a work glove. On the yard slate, beneath PANEL MATERIALS, she found her name.

“Abadi materials, in-kind,” she read. Cass looked past her at the supplier hold blinking amber beside the entry. “It is temporary. They release the mineral stock when Transit clears the first draw.” “You said materials covered.” “They are covered. Just not this morning.” He tried a small smile and failed to make it casual.

Wren opened the roster, removed ABADI, WREN from the wall crew, and let the confirmation tone sound between the pillars. “You can call me when the paint belongs to you.” Cass reached toward the slate, then stopped before touching it. The pulse from his speakers kept knocking softly at six blank panels while she rolled her tarp back over her brushes and walked through the open gate without looking up at the concrete.

At 10:16 Saturday morning, the darkroom smelled of fixer and wet concrete. Ondine stood at the rinse sink, rocking a tray with two fingers, while the municipal commission notice opened across Nuri’s wrist glass at the doorway. Outside, somebody on 38th Avenue had started an air compressor; its pulse came thinly through the loading-bay wall.

Nuri read the notice once without moving. Then they read the middle sentence aloud anyway. “The revised submission remains eligible for final selection.” They looked at the tray rather than at Ondine. “No supplemental authorship review. No portrait. Nothing.”

Ondine lifted one print by its edge. It showed the warehouse stairwell, empty except for a bright square of morning on the third step. “They kept your deck.”

“They kept the deck I had after you took yours out of it.” Nuri’s thumb closed the notice, then opened it again. “You do not get to be my correction again.”

Ondine set the print back into the water. “I never was.” She did not look up when Nuri left the doorway, and Nuri did not wait for her to.
