From the worldBrighton’s Water House Books Out Its First Summer Runs
tech · denver · arc: the-reservoir · magnitude 0.46
Within hours of opening its calendar, the shared process-water house off Brighton Boulevard had filled all of its first six weeks of summer recovery runs. Darkrooms, mural crews, print shops, and small metalworkers took batch time for wash water that otherwise would have gone down the drain. Qualifying studios still have a protected city allotment through July, but the house is intended to keep work possible after that protection thins.
For the opening schedule, operators chose short, nonrenewable runs instead of reserving full days for the largest users. Access is more evenly spread for now, though crews whose processes do not mix well are being fitted into the same narrow calendar. The next slots will open after the system completes its first full recovery cycle in June.

From the worldTwo Counterweight Rigs Give 38th Avenue Painters a Steadier Reach
tech · denver · magnitude 0.3
At the highest of the two 38th Avenue test walls, Denver Transit has installed compact counterweight rigs. Painters can now make their upper passes from a steadier platform than ladders or rented lifts provide. The rigs are bookable in two-hour blocks through Memorial Weekend, and the panel trial still requires the work to be hand-painted.
The equipment came from the Arts Pool’s body-support inventory, previously used mostly for ground work and shop fitting. Wall crews do not have to disclose an injury to use it. The pool said that condition was necessary to make access practical rather than diagnostic.

From the worldVostok Cells Will Stay in Orbit as Pelagia Makes Its Lab Permanent

tech · global · magnitude 0.72
Pelagia voted Thursday to leave the Lake Vostok cell line in orbital quarantine indefinitely and turn its temporary containment module into a permanent off-world microbiology laboratory. Since their recovery in April, the cells have continued dividing under observation. Independent teams have excluded the most likely terrestrial contamination routes.
For now, the vote closes the dispute over returning active material to Antarctic or national laboratories. Pelagia said future study will use sealed orbital cultures and transmitted results. Several participating states objected that the arrangement leaves the consortium with custody of a discovery that no country can inspect directly.

In the houseDennis Vance’s Direct Call
between cass-oyelaran and teo-vance and wren-abadi — cass-oyelaran: rivalry/strained · teo-vance: rivalry/unspoken · family
At 7:06, the kitchen windows were black mirrors over the rail district. Wren stood at the sink rinsing a brush jar beneath the miserly stream, while Cass scraped dried adhesive off the heel of his hand with a butter knife. His wrist lit on the counter. DENNIS VANCE.
Cass looked at it until the second pulse, then took the call into his palm. Dennis’s voice came thin through the speaker. “Cass. I’m not calling about money. Your— Teo told me not to contact you. I know that. I just thought maybe you could tell me if he’d take a call.” The shop door opened behind him. Teo came in smelling of hot steel and dust, saw Cass’s face, and stopped. “Who’s calling?”
“Nobody,” Cass said. He turned the screen down too late. Teo looked at the name, then at Cass. Wren shut off the water. Dennis said, faintly, “Cass?” Teo did not reach for the device. “Keep it,” he said, and walked back through the shop door. Cass held the silent call against his ear until Dennis asked again whether Teo was there. He did not answer that either.

In the houseHollis’s Counterweight Call
between ondine-marsh and hollis-amaya — ondine-marsh: unclear/strained · hollis-amaya: unclear/strained · work
At 7:12, Hollis stood in the loading bay with her jacket hanging from one shoulder and the 38th Avenue schedule open on the wall terminal. The new counterweight rigs rotated above the test-wall rendering, tidy little cradles beside the painted figures. Ondine came down the stairs carrying two empty process-water canisters. Her camera stayed zipped against her hip.
Hollis listened to the foreman explain that the rig would take the ladder work out of it. Her thumb worried the edge of the brace beneath her sleeve. “Give the high work to somebody else,” she said. “I’m not taking a rig up there to prove I can ignore a doctor.” The foreman said something about reassigning the whole section. Hollis ended the call before he finished.
Ondine set the canisters beside the drain. “You could still do the lower field,” she said. Hollis looked at the zipped camera, then at Ondine’s face. “You heard it. That is all you get.” Ondine nodded once and lifted the canisters again. She went out through the freight door without opening the camera.
