A lightweight scan combines a brief guided movement test with a printed loading plan, and a referral for repair or rehabilitation no longer starts with a specialist appointment.

The service cannot cure the problem or spare anyone bad news. It can measure a persistent click, a deadened hand or the last inch of reach that has gone missing before the condition becomes an emergency.

A synchronized review of Antarctic cores has found a short, sharp methane pulse from the early nineteenth century, the International Ice Archive said Friday. No major climate reconstruction had retained the signal. It appears to have lasted less than a decade and is being compared with volcanic, wetland and ocean-current records.

The discovery does not change measurements of present warming. It gives climate modelers a natural swing they had been missing, however, and several runoff and crop insurers said they would rerun their long-range baselines instead of waiting for a final paper.

At 6:38, Cass was in the loading bay cutting the supplier seals off six squat paint tubs. The freight door stood open to a dry pink evening and the dead spur beyond it. Wren stopped at the threshold when she saw the delivery record projected on the crate lid: OYELARAN, C. / PAID. No Abadi line anywhere.

“You found money,” she said. Cass kept cutting tape. “The advance cleared.” He turned the record toward her with one finger, not offering it. “The advance cleared, and I paid the supplier before I paid rent.” Wren looked from the receipt to the tubs. “That was not an instruction.” “No.” He set the blade down. “The paint belongs to the job. Your fee is still your fee.”

Ondine came through from the darkroom with her camera hanging against her hip. She took in the receipt, the open tubs, Wren’s brace under her sleeve. For once, she did not lift the camera. “The light’s bad,” she said, though the bay was full of it, and went upstairs. Cass waited while Wren pressed her thumb into the dull red cap. “The figures can’t look trapped,” she said. “Not like they’re waiting for transit to decide whether they exist.” He did not fill the silence after it. Finally she wiped red dust onto her jeans. “I’ll be at the wall Monday. Bring that record to the foreman.”

At 8:37 p.m., the print room smelled of hot paper and dust from the vent. Nuri was flattening a municipal commission board beneath the cutter bar when their wrist screen blinked again: HENSHAW INDUSTRIAL, second attempt. Teo stopped in the doorway with his jacket still on.

“He called this morning,” Nuri said. “Asked whether you were avoiding him or dead. I said neither was my information.” They slid the screen facedown before Teo could mistake the gesture for an offering. “Then I did not answer again.”

Teo stood beside the humming printer long enough that Nuri went back to squaring the board. He took out his own phone, found the unanswered message, and put the call on speaker. When Henshaw’s service picked up, Teo said, “This is Vance. If you want my answer, you call me, not whoever shares an address with me.” He ended the call before the automated voice could answer. Nuri pressed the cutter down. The blade came through the board cleanly, and neither of them said it was better than before.
