From the worldTransit Builds the Test Walls Before Picking Six 38th Avenue Painters
cultural · denver · magnitude 0.31
Artists weighing Denver Transit's six reserved hand-painted wall panels can now work from a fenced preparation yard beneath the 38th Avenue elevated way. The agency is covering mineral-paint tests, lift-height mockups and two weeks of wall preparation, so applicants do not have to carry that risk inside speculative proposals.
No panel has been assigned. Transit said it will favor work able to withstand sun, soot and winter salt, rather than a polished application render—an unusual standard in a commission process increasingly shaped by visual simulations.

From the worldHail Screens Cover Eight Acres in First Commercial Front Range Deployment
tech · front-range · magnitude 0.44
On Thursday, a growers' cooperative north of Longmont put the Front Range's first leased hail gantry rows into commercial use. As a storm cell crossed the foothills, woven protection screens spread over eight acres of peach and apple trees. The gantries had spent three seasons in research-plot trials before reaching an orchard.
They cost too much for broad acreage and cannot address drought. Still, the cooperative said smaller orchards might avoid losing a full year's crop to a ten-minute May storm. From the service road, neighboring growers watched less for the machinery than for the fruit beneath it, waiting to see whether it stayed unbruised.

From the worldShifting Ice Forces Enceladus Consortium to Release Landing Reservations

tech · global · arc: the-survey · magnitude 0.78
The Enceladus Survey Consortium has suspended its proposed human-landing timetable. Redirected second-pass data showed rapid surface displacement at all six candidate fissure sites, not only at the site rejected last week. Ice shelves thought stable moved enough during the observation interval to overturn fixed-anchor assumptions throughout the survey area.
The orbital and robotic program will continue, Consortium director Amina Rhee said, but no replacement landing date will be set until a crew shelter can be shown movable or secure through a full local cycle. Several partner governments had expected a timetable this summer; their launch reservations are now being released.

between nuri-alvear and teo-vance — nuri-alvear: rivalry/ended · teo-vance: rivalry/strained · money
At 6:18 p.m., rain ticked against the high shop windows while Teo checked the alignment gauge against a steel bracket. Nuri stood in the doorway with their wrist screen held flat in one hand. The transfer receipt from yesterday had reversed itself: one hundred credits returned, Cass’s name beneath it, no note beyond declined.
“Did you tell him to do that?” Nuri asked. Teo did not look up from the gauge. “No.” He turned the bracket a fraction, listened to the metal settle. “He gets to decide what he takes.” Nuri laughed once, without anything funny in it. “Apparently everyone does.”
They opened the ledger, deleted the pending-payment field, and left the balance under Cass alone. Teo watched them do it. “I am done making Cass’s money a door back into your life,” Nuri said. Teo set the gauge in its case. “Good. Don’t make it a door into his, either.” Nuri closed the ledger and went upstairs before he could see whether that landed.

between wren-abadi and cass-oyelaran — wren-abadi: working/together · cass-oyelaran: working/declared · work
At 6:32, with hail ticking hard against the north skylight, Cass stood just inside Wren’s studio holding a Transit yard access slate. The screen showed three mineral-paint test walls beneath the 38th Avenue viaduct, each one blank as a receipt. Wren kept working red into the corner of her canvas with the heel of her splinted thumb.
“Your sounds need something to land on,” she said. “That is not an offer.”
“It is six hundred for three panels.” He set the slate on the crate without sliding it toward her. “Paid on installation. Materials covered.” Wren looked at the number, then at him. “And when your review asks where you live?” Cass tapped RECORD TERMS. The lens opened between them. “Abadi’s fee is six hundred, and Abadi’s north studio is not payment, security, or part of this submission.”
The rainwater pipe knocked inside the wall. Wren stopped scraping. “Make it seven if they add a fourth wall.” Cass nodded once, too quickly. She put her thumb brace against the slate and signed below his name. Then she turned the canvas toward the window again, already measuring the dead concrete under the elevated way in her head.
