Disability and tenant-access groups described the proposal as incomplete but substantive. He reached for the monitor. “It was room tone.” “You paid for paint there.” Her hand tightened around the paddle, primer climbing the wood. “You put it in.”

“I didn’t know it was there.” He listened once, jaw working, then selected the narrow blue strip on the display. Wren watched him delete it. “It isn’t part of the wall,” he said. She gave him no answer. She carried the primer to the panel and laid down the first broad, uneven sweep while Cass lowered the recorder and caught only the brush dragging across wood.

Same day rate. It says the upper section was reassigned.”

Hollis stopped pulling the sleeve. “Who else got that?” Nuri turned the screen slightly away from Ondine’s darkroom door. “Your foreman. The crew channel. Apparently the city thinks modified duty needs an audience.” Hollis took out her phone and called before either of them could offer a useful face. When the foreman answered, she said, “I will take ground lead at my old rate, and if anybody calls it rescue, send them home.” She listened, jaw working once. “Monday, then.”

Ondine’s camera bag stayed zipped on the drainboard. She said, “They made the loss public.” Hollis looked at the bag, then at her. “Don’t make that your good behavior.” Nuri returned to the concourse figures without saying whether the foreman had agreed to Hollis’s condition; the call’s confirmation sat bright on Hollis’s phone between the paint rags.
