From the worldHenshaw Brings Two Years of Rail Repairs to North Denvereconomic · denver · magnitude 0.32

A two-year package from the Front Range Transit Cooperative will put Henshaw Rail to work on freight-corridor bridges and platform steel. Steady fabrication hours are expected back on the company's north Denver floor by May. The agreement puts repair ahead of replacement and, once the primary work is assigned, sets aside part of Henshaw's salvage inventory for small certified shops.

Against the cooperative's automated maintenance network, the award is modest. For the rail district, it brings back something harder to find: dependable shifts that are loud, physical, and not easily moved to a cleaner place.

The seven finalists for Union Station's Arrival Wall are now on view along the east concourse, where commuters have ten days to register a preference in person instead of through their feeds. Nuri Alvear's uncertified Denver render remains among them, with its immaculate false streets identified plainly as machine-composited.

The result will advise the transit arts panel, which retains the authority to select the commission. Station staff said the display was already pulling people from the platforms long enough to disagree about what an arrival should be.

After watching Luyten's Star, a nearby red dwarf known for unstable signals, the Helion deep-sky array has confirmed a rocky planet in its temperate orbit. Provisionally called Luyten d, the world is too far away for a human mission and too indistinct for anyone to claim an atmosphere. Its measured mass and orbit nevertheless put it at the front of the next generation of interferometers' targets.

Full observing resumed at Helion this month, following an eleven-month repair. Observatory director Saira Menon called the confirmation "a good first night back" and added the necessary caution: temperate does not mean habitable.

At 9:12 that night, the north studio smelled of linseed and wet plaster. Wren stood too close to the red canvas, her brace unfastened and lying on the drop cloth like a shed piece of skin. She had worked a thin gray-brown edge into the reflected hand with the smallest brush she owned. When Ondine stopped in the doorway, Wren tucked her right thumb against her palm too late.

“You took it off,” Ondine said.

“It was in the way.” Wren set the brush down with her left hand. On the worktable, the clinic instructions were open beneath a rag: no loading, no pressure grip, report aggravating use. “Friday, if they ask whether I’ve been using it, you don’t answer for me.”

Ondine looked at the paint on Wren’s thumb, then at the instructions. “I won’t lie for you.” Wren’s mouth tightened. “You are coming to watch me get told no.” “No,” Ondine said. “I’ll come Friday because I said I would, but I’m not your friend if what you need from me is a lie.” Wren refastened the brace one-handed, badly, and turned back to the canvas without asking Ondine to help.

At 5:18, the east concourse at Union Station smelled of rain blown off the platforms and hot flour from the kiosk. Nuri stood in front of their Arrival Wall panel while commuters pressed their palms to the preference rail. Their Denver had too-clean brick, a public bench no one had scratched, light lying politely across everything. Cass’s message sat open on their wrist: Did Teo know before you told me?

Teo came off the northbound platform in his work jacket, carrying his gloves in one hand. He saw the message when Nuri turned their wrist toward him. “He’s asking you,” he said.

“He’s asking whether you were there.” Nuri kept their arm out between them. “I could say you found out after.” Teo looked past them at the render, then back at the small bright words. “You could.” He rubbed a black crescent of shop grit off his thumb. “Tell him I knew before you sent it, and tell him I let you send it alone.” Nuri’s mouth moved once, without sound. Teo walked toward the gates before they answered Cass, leaving the panel behind him with its pristine little city waiting for votes.
