Cass had until midnight to decide which promise five hundred dollars was worth
Cold spring damp filmed the kitchen windows of the warehouse, and the fan only managed to distribute fried onions and wet brick. At 8:40, Ondine Marsh checked Thursday’s South Platte call sheet when Cassius "Cass" Oyelaran arrived in his jacket and admitted he had accepted another sound job that same night for five hundred dollars. They argued about scheduling, but really about whether his need could make her responsible for saving him from the promises he made. Ondine told him to choose by midnight and went upstairs before she could ask whether five hundred dollars was the whole of his trouble. Cass, grateful once for her clinic-rate work and now suspicious of what gratitude might cost, kept his slate turned away.
The Feed kept offering the new RiNo route for counterweight shoulder rigs, a merciful-looking piece of equipment for muralists, welders, and anyone whose body was expected to bear the whole job; Hollis Amaya did not make it a conversation. Cass knew enough about her right shoulder to understand that his Thursday lift shift was not casual work, and said nothing because she had made silence one of its conditions. Teodor "Teo" Vance went on holding the joint open; Nuri Alvear waited with the file open; Wren Abadi, whose solvent jar had yielded yesterday but nothing else had, carried the quieter aftermath of Cass’s work with her.
Cass made Doors Beneath the Hands, letting salvaged speakers return a once-dangerous pipe’s hum to brick and metal after he removed its loose brace. Wren told him the room’s delayed answer was the part she believed, though she missed the rattle’s unwilling little body and could not decide whether the new quiet served the piece or his pride. Ondine made Thursday, With the Photograph Turned Over from a damaged family print, leaving its glass, handling marks, and care visible; privately, Cass’s dark slate kept intruding on the exposure despite her refusal to make his problem hers. By midnight, he still had two jobs and only one Thursday.
From the worldShoulder rigs give Denver crews a less punishing way up

At a South Platte service yard Tuesday, the Front Range Lift Cooperative opened its seasonal equipment library for mural crews, sign painters, welders and other workers whose bodies are too often treated as disposable tools. The fitted counterweight rigs and overhead-motion supports look like plain harnesses with articulated load arms. They take some of the strain out of a long roller pass or a high grinder cut, without making either job easy.
The first fitting route runs through RiNo, Five Points and the industrial blocks north of I-70. Cooperative staff said the regional trade-injury pool funds the program and that workers do not need an employer referral. That last provision had drawn a line before noon.

From the worldNew Atlantic duties put repair steel and olive products on the bill

economic · global · arc: the-tariffs · magnitude 0.58
A second package of retaliatory duties from the Atlantic Trade Secretariat reached stores and repair shops Tuesday. It covers British repair steel, marine fasteners and preserved olive products, following London's refusal to suspend its licensing surcharge on North American agricultural models.
Compared with the semiconductor and freight disputes that started the quarrel, the package is small. Its effects are harder to miss in ordinary purchases: repair shops buy the steel by the bundle, while the oil and olives are staples, not luxuries. British ministers dismissed the move as theatrical. Secretariat chair Amara Dube said shoppers were meant to understand it at the checkout counter.

From the worldLake Erie link starts carrying power after nine years of work

tech · global · magnitude 0.47
Commercial service began Tuesday on the Great Lakes Grid Authority's superconducting link beneath Lake Erie. The cooled cable route connects Ontario storage and Michigan wind to the eastern intertie after nine years of construction. The authority said it can carry enough electricity to meet peak demand in several mid-sized cities without building another transmission corridor across populated land.
The link has not settled the continent's regional grid arguments. It does give operators more room during heat waves and plant outages, while bringing the older question of who pays for shared resilience back into immediate view.

In the houseCass’s Thursday Call Sheet
between cass-oyelaran and ondine-marsh — cass-oyelaran: working/strained · ondine-marsh: working/strained · betrayal
At 8:40, the common kitchen windows sweated onto the sill while the ventilation fan worried at the smell of somebody’s fried onions. Ondine stood at the table with the South Platte call sheet enlarged on her slate, checking names against the cooperative’s access list. Cass came in with his jacket still on and watched the dates scroll beneath her thumb.
“Thursday,” he said. “I may have a problem with Thursday.” He took out his own slate, then did not turn it around. “A sound job came in. Five hundred. Same night.” Ondine looked at him until he added, “I said yes this afternoon.”
She closed the call sheet. “After you said yes to me.” Cass lifted one shoulder, trying for smallness and missing it. “I need five hundred dollars.” “Then take five hundred dollars,” she said. “Choose one by midnight; I’m not moving a whole yard because you needed to say yes twice.” He stared at the dark screen in his hand. She picked up her mug and went upstairs without asking which job he meant to keep.
