From the worldSix Small Crews Take the First High Work Pool Lifts Above RiNo
tech · denver · magnitude 0.28
On Friday, Denver’s High Work Pool put six independent facade crews to work on civic-rate lift rigs along Brighton Boulevard and in the old industrial blocks east of the tracks. The pool combines clearance records, weather holds and trained ground support, opening access to equipment that had generally been priced for large contractors.
Mural repair, sign-painting and masonry teams made up the first dispatches. Pool operators said the aim was not to make overhead work cheap. It was to let someone take on a small job without putting a shoulder, a ladder and a week’s income at risk on the same afternoon.

From the worldSun Valley Exchange Tags Steel Before It Reaches the Racks
tech · denver · magnitude 0.24
A compact robotic sort line opened Friday at the Sun Valley Salvage Exchange, where it can identify alloy, stress history and embedded contaminants in mixed demolition steel before the material reaches the public racks. Small fabricators can now purchase tagged offcuts with a usable material record instead of paying to test uncertain stock themselves.
The line was designed for the irregular loads large recyclers turn away, including bent rail brackets, stair stringers, old warehouse plate and short runs from demolished industrial bays. A human yard crew will still handle intake and cutting, along with the judgments scanners cannot make about what a piece might become.

From the worldVostok Core Shows Cells Still Metabolizing After Thaw

tech · global · magnitude 0.71
Cells in a sealed core recovered from Lake Vostok showed active metabolism after controlled thawing, Pelagia’s Antarctic drilling team said Friday. It is the first confirmed evidence of living activity in sampled water from the lake, rather than only preserved genetic fragments.
The result does not establish a new branch of life, and the consortium said its cultures remain inside the bore-site containment system. Pelagia went to the lake to reconstruct an ancient climate record; the mission is now operating one of Earth’s most closely watched biological quarantine sites.

In the houseCass’s Henshaw Credit
between cass-oyelaran and teo-vance and ondine-marsh — cass-oyelaran: friendship/ended · teo-vance: friendship/strained · betrayal
At 7:41, Teo’s phone lit on the south-shop bench beside the loose crosspiece: HENSHAW TALENT POOL — CASS OYELARAN HAS RECOMMENDED YOU. REVIEW INVITATION. Under it, Dennis’s name waited with a newer message. Teo opened that one first. I heard you. I won’t give your number out again. The rail is good. I was wrong.
Cass came in from the loading bay with rain freckles dark on his jacket and saw the Henshaw header before Teo turned the phone over. Ondine was clipping negatives along the wire by the utility sink. “They gave you money for that?” she asked. Cass looked at her, then at Teo. “Credit. Two hundred. He can decline it.” Teo’s hand closed around the phone so hard the case creaked. “You used my name because you can’t ask anybody for yours.”
Cass’s mouth moved once before he found anything. “I put you somewhere they’ll pay you properly.” Teo shoved past the bench, catching Cass’s shoulder with his own on the way to the freight door. “Don’t call us friends again.” Cass stayed where he was, his hand flat on the steel upright. “I won’t.” The freight door slammed hard enough to make Ondine’s wet strips sway. She did not lift her camera.
