Cass withdrew the recording Wren had entered for him
Dry spring wind found the warehouse’s loose freight-door chain and knocked it twice against the brick, as if the building were trying to be admitted somewhere. At 9:15 Wren Abadi stood beside the north-studio wall, beneath the empty speaker bracket and her red canvas, with Transit’s confirmation open on her slate. Cassius "Cass" Oyelaran came in carrying his recorder case and saw at once what she had done. Wren told him the withdrawal window closed at ten because she could not say that the six hundred dollars had made her afraid of losing Friday’s piece as well. Cass told her she had wanted the pleasure of making him undo it himself, though what he could not bear was her turning his work into payment without asking. He selected WITHDRAW SUBMISSION and left the bracket empty. Hollis Amaya, holding an aerosol crate carefully with her good hand, gave him Thursday’s lift shift at six; neither of them named the clinic card or the money he needed.
Later, Teodor "Teo" Vance listened to Dennis insist that the rail job was good and that someone else would fill it. Nuri Alvear, caught at the shop door with plotting film, said they had opened Dennis’s letter because they thought Teo would leave it unopened. It was meant as an explanation, but Teo heard an admission: Nuri had treated his father like a lever in a stalled project. He went out into the alley, leaving them with the fallen film and no useful repair. The Feed carried Denver’s decision to keep its promised human review to two days, a narrower mercy than some advocates wanted, while the rail yards reserved old steel for small shops and an open clinical atlas began mapping injuries that had resisted easy names. No one made art. Wren remained by the dark confirmation light, knowing the blank wall was not yet forgiveness and not knowing what Friday could hold now.
From the worldDenver Coalition Holds Its Human Review Line at Two Days

political · denver · arc: the-ballot · magnitude 0.42
At its Sunday vote, Denver’s Right-to-a-Human coalition kept the proposed rule requiring a human review within two days when a resident challenges a consequential civic-AI decision. Members turned down a broader version that would have promised review whenever an automated decision was disputed, without setting a deadline the coalition could enforce.
Disability and tenant advocates who wanted the wider guarantee are likely to be disappointed. Coalition organizers said the two-day standard was the language they could take to voters and defend, without making every disputed transit, benefits, or permit decision an unstaffed promise.

From the worldFour Rail Corridor Yards Set Aside Steel for Small Shops

economic · denver · magnitude 0.27
Small Denver fabricators will have access to a reserved share of existing structural-steel stock after four salvage yards along the old freight corridor agreed to sell it at a posted pooled rate through the end of June. The arrangement will not bring steel prices down. It is meant to shield offcuts, plate, and usable beam lengths from the daily repricing that followed the new Atlantic duties.
The reserve draws only on inventory already in the yards and will come out in small lots, with repair work and independent shops first in line. Larger contractors remain free to buy elsewhere, but this stock is not available to them.

From the worldOpen Atlas Maps Treatment Paths for More Than 1,800 Rare Injuries
tech · global · magnitude 0.58
An open clinical atlas released Sunday by the Pacific Genome Network brings together repair pathways for more than 1,800 rare tendon, nerve, and cartilage injuries. Hospitals and clinics now have a shared reference for treatments that had often required proprietary training sets.
The network stressed that the atlas does not prescribe care; local clinical oversight is still required. Even so, rehabilitation systems in twelve member cities began using it immediately. The change is expected to reduce the time spent searching for workable treatment plans for patients whose injuries did not fit familiar categories.

In the houseCass's Withdrawal
between cass-oyelaran and wren-abadi and hollis-amaya — cass-oyelaran: working/strained · wren-abadi: working/ended · betrayal
At 9:15, Wren stood at the north-studio wall with the small speaker bracket empty beneath the red canvas. Her slate lay faceup on the paint table, Transit’s confirmation page still open. Cass came in carrying his recorder case, saw the blue header, and did not take off his coat.
"The withdrawal window closes at ten," Wren said. "I thought you should know." He looked at her then, properly. "You thought I should have the pleasure of doing it myself." She started to say something about the six hundred, then stopped when his mouth moved. Cass put his thumb to the slate’s consent field, opened the red option, and selected WITHDRAW SUBMISSION. "You don't get to make it pay for me."
In the hall, Hollis had one aerosol crate tilted against her knee, her good hand under its bottom. The withdrawal receipt chimed thinly through the open door. Cass stepped around her. "Thursday still on?" he asked. Hollis shifted the crate without looking at Wren. "Six," she said. Wren stayed beside the blank bracket until the confirmation light went dark.

In the houseDennis’s Voicemail
between teo-vance and nuri-alvear — teo-vance: working/strained · nuri-alvear: working/ended · family
At 7:10, Teo stood at the welding bench with his phone faceup beside the vise. Dennis’s voicemail filled the shop in its tinny, careful voice: “You don’t want the hours, that’s your call. The rail is good, Teo. You know it is.” Teo let the message finish, then deleted nothing. Nuri had come in for a roll of plotting film and stopped at the door when they heard it.
“I told him no,” Teo said. He kept looking at the black screen. “He said he’d fill the slot.” Nuri set the film down again. “At least you called.” Teo looked over then, hard enough that they did not add anything. “I opened it because I thought you would leave it unopened,” they said.
The loose freight-door chain knocked twice in the wind. Teo picked up the phone and slid it into his pocket. “You decided my father was a button you could press.” Nuri’s mouth moved once before they shut it. Teo went past them into the alley, leaving the plotting film on the concrete where it had fallen.
