Wren booked Saturday and asked Ondine to come without recording it

Spring rain struck the north windows of the warehouse at 6:12 like gravel, making the brick rooms feel briefly less abandoned by the city. Wren Abadi held her right thumb rigid against her palm and booked the mobile clinic’s Saturday slot with her left hand. She told Ondine Marsh to come, and then required her to leave both camera and notebook behind. It was not forgiveness, though Wren wanted it to resemble trust enough to survive the asking. Ondine said all right without trying to make the permission larger than it was. Hollis Amaya, hauling an aerosol crate past the door, saw the green confirmation square and continued on before concern could become an offer Wren would have to refuse. Teodor "Teo" Vance kept the building’s practical burdens held open; Nuri Alvear had a receipt where he wanted an answer, and neither of them made work.

People talked around the three clinical freight loads waiting safely on reserve stock at 48th Avenue: Denver called the daylight pilot functional, while Cheyenne had a number for what Denver’s quiet streets cost elsewhere. Nuri noticed the six paid Planning model-room places with the wary attention of someone offered a door whose terms he did not yet trust. Far away, the first sealed Lake Vostok core had been raised, but the warehouse gave its real attention to what rooms remembered. Cassius "Cass" Oyelaran made After the Brace, the Door, sending a loosened pipe’s rattle back through speakers until its aftermath seemed to answer the walls. He was grateful that Hollis had heard something in it, and suspicious of the gratitude because it arrived before his invoice was settled. Hollis made Answer Held in the Wall, changing her red passage into the space a hand leaves behind; she privately understood Cass’s delay better than she could have asked him about it. Ondine made North Window, 6:12, preserving rain-dark glass, Wren’s flyer, and the partial photographer herself. She called the overlaps honest, though she knew honesty could still be a kind of taking. Saturday remained booked, and no one knew yet what Wren’s hand would permit.

At the end of the Mountain West Clinical Freight Board’s first full weekday under its daylight-only pilot, three nonurgent loads remained in refrigerated hold at the 48th Avenue depot. They were replacement imaging components for Cheyenne, sterile pump housings for Pueblo, and dental ceramics bound for Albuquerque. Local reserve stock covered all three, and no treatment was delayed.

The board called the holds evidence that the pilot was operating as intended, not that it had failed. Cheyenne’s health cooperative saw the result differently, arguing that Denver had kept its nighttime streets quiet by requiring smaller cities to carry more inventory. A dispute that had been framed as a question of scheduling windows now had a number clinics could put on their shelves.

Denver’s Planning Office is offering six short-term places in its public model room to independent image-makers. Their assignment is to create speculative, street-level views of contested infill sites before neighborhood hearings. The images will sit alongside the office’s own simulations, but cannot be used as approval materials.

The modest paid roster is meant to make development proposals readable to people who do not work from parcel maps. It also gives renderers outside the large civic contractors an uncommon municipal brief. The first selections are due next week.

On Thursday, the international vessel Pelagia raised the first sealed core from the new Lake Vostok borehole, completing a seven-year drilling program intended to sample the lake’s upper sediments without exposing them to surface biology. The core has been transferred to a mobile clean laboratory off the Ross Ice Shelf.

Researchers said the sample has produced no biological finding. Its immediate importance is climatic: trapped sediment and water chemistry could extend the Southern Hemisphere record well beyond existing polar cores. Participating states had spent years disputing access, contamination rules and publication rights. The sample is now in hand.

At 6:12, rain tapped the north windows hard enough to sound like thrown gravel. Wren stood over the worktable with the clinic flyer open beside her palette knife, her right thumb held stiff against her palm. Ondine sat on the far stool in her coat, camera bag absent again. On Wren’s wall screen, the mobile clinic’s next available slot blinked Saturday, 9:20.

“It’s after Friday,” Wren said. She pressed the booking field with her left index finger, missed it, then hit it again. The confirmation made a small green square. In the hall, Hollis dragged one aerosol crate past the open door and stopped when she saw the square. Wren did not look up. “Come with me Saturday,” she said to Ondine. After a beat, she added, “And leave the notebook here.”

Ondine’s mouth opened, then closed. “All right,” she said. Hollis pulled the crate onward before either of them could decide she had been listening. Wren folded the flyer once, badly, with her left hand and set it under the palette knife.
