From the worldSmall Rail Shops Get Night Access to Henshaw’s Fit Bench
tech · denver · magnitude 0.28
Small shops can now reserve a supervised four-hour overnight block at Henshaw Rail’s new fit bench beside the company’s North Denver calibration bay. The bench handles drilling, straightening and matching the certified cut-length stock coming off Henshaw’s repair contract.
Use comes at a fee, set below the industrial rate, and includes a technician’s sign-off for load-bearing joins. By noon, rail-district fabricators had made the first reservations. Before this, some had been buying only the warped salvage they could haul home.

From the worldArrival Wall Proposals Face Commuter-Evening Test at Union Station
tech · denver · magnitude 0.25
For two evening commuter cycles, Union Station is showing the seven Arrival Wall finalists at full architectural scale on the east concourse after dark. The displays use projected light instead of installed material, while keeping each proposal’s intended sightlines from the platforms and 17th Street.
Nuri Alvear’s uncertified render, one of the public finalists, is scheduled to run Saturday night. Comments from the tests will appear with the final selection packet, the commission said, but they will not count as a vote.

From the worldShifting Enceladus Ice Complicates Morrow Landing Plans

tech · global · arc: the-survey · magnitude 0.67
A section of Enceladus’s south-polar ice shell is moving laterally over a fissure being considered for a future research landing, according to the Morrow survey spacecraft. The shift measured in centimeters during the pass’s first five days. That is slow, but enough to challenge earlier assumptions about how long a surface anchor could stay aligned with a vent.
Mission operators redirected the spacecraft’s remaining observations to the moving section and postponed the preliminary landing map. The prospective crew coalition said it would make no timetable decision until second-pass data shows whether the motion is seasonal or reflects a more persistent instability.

In the houseDennis Vance’s Second Call
between teo-vance and cass-oyelaran — teo-vance: friendship/ended · cass-oyelaran: friendship/ended · family
At 8:04, Cass had Teo’s long alignment gauge half out from under the south-shop bench, wrapped in an old moving blanket beside a printed Henshaw fit-bench reservation. The freight door was shut against the wet spring wind. Teo saw the Henshaw header before he saw Cass’s hand. “Put it back.”
“I need it for four hours,” Cass said. “The bench is supervised. I can straighten the bracket there, sell the bracket, and nobody has to make a speech.” Teo’s phone began to vibrate against the steel tabletop. DENNIS VANCE filled the small screen. Cass gave the gauge a bitter little lift. “Take it. Maybe he’s got a job for me too.” Teo took the call anyway. He listened with his back to Cass, said almost nothing, then went still when Dennis said, awkwardly, that he had looked at the rail photograph twice and that it was good work.
When Teo ended the call, Cass had put the gauge on the bench but not the reservation away. “At least one man finally told you your little rail was good,” he said. Teo looked at him until Cass’s mouth closed. “Get out of my shop, Cass,” Teo said. “Don’t come back in here like we’re friends.” Cass folded the reservation into quarters, left the gauge where it was, and went through the side door without slamming it.

In the houseNuri’s Removed Portrait
between ondine-marsh and nuri-alvear — ondine-marsh: working/strained · nuri-alvear: working/strained · work
At 10:38 p.m., Nuri sat at the scarred table outside the darkroom with the municipal deck open across their wristglass. The portrait Ondine had made of them filled the wall-facing projection: their face unsmiling, the pale seam of old light at one shoulder. Rain ticked in the loading-bay gutter. Ondine stood in the darkroom doorway, drying clips pinched between two fingers.
“I want those six destroyed before Monday,” Nuri said. “Not filed. Not marked private. Destroyed.” Ondine looked past them at the portrait. “No.” Nuri gave one short laugh that did not make room for either of them. “That was quick.” “You knew the answer.” “I knew you liked leaving things where people could find them.”
Nuri tapped the deck controls. The portrait collapsed into a small thumbnail, then vanished from the sequence. They did not look at Ondine while they did it. “Then I’m not taking it,” they said. Ondine’s clips clicked together in her hand. She did not say that the city would like it, or that it was the best thing in the deck. Nuri closed the presentation and walked upstairs with the weaker version.
