On Monday, Denver Mayor Elias Ward refused to step aside over footage showing him leaving a Larimer Street restaurant Friday night with a robotic escort supplied by a firm whose municipal access contract he had publicly defended. Ward said the meeting was personal and that the contract had gone through ordinary review.

What many had dismissed as gossip took on a different weight after the refusal. Assembly members who had kept clear of the matter over the weekend requested Ward's escort logs and meeting calendar. His office said both would be turned over to the city ethics clerk.

From the worldDenver Makes Lift Access a Requirement for New Civic Wall Worktech · denver · magnitude 0.34

New city-funded exterior-art contracts in Denver will have to provide stabilized lift access or another approved assist system. Public Works is ending the practice of treating overhead equipment as optional for independent wall crews. The requirement covers solicitations issued after May 1 and creates a shared-equipment pool for smaller teams.

The policy came out of a winter review of injury reports and missed deadlines on large facades. At RiNo's High Work Library, reservations were full by midday after the announcement, mostly from crews now pricing summer jobs they had previously turned down.

Britain's 28 percent surcharge on nonessential imports has drawn a coordinated response from a coalition of Atlantic trading partners. In thirty days, the coalition will impose a levy on British consumer goods, excluding medical supply chains, grid hardware and staple foods. Clothing, household electronics, spirits and finished furnishings are included.

British ministers said the countermeasure showed their tariff had been necessary. Coalition representatives pointed to the exemptions as evidence that neither side meant to interrupt essential trade. Retail buyers were not persuaded, and began revising summer orders ahead of the new rates.

At 8:16, the loading bay lift stood half a meter off the concrete with its stabilizers splayed over the yellow lines. A Public Works alert crawled silently across the small screen clipped to its rail: LIFT ACCESS REQUIRED FOR CIVIC WALL CONTRACTS. Hollis ignored it and reached overhead to tighten the basket’s paint-hook strap. Her right shoulder clicked once. The control puck slid out of her hand.

Cass, coming through the freight door with coffee gone cold in a paper cup, caught the puck before it hit the floor. Hollis bent for it anyway, then stopped with her face turned toward the brick. Her arm hung loose and wrong. “Don’t start,” she said. Cass set down the cup, climbed the two steps, and caught the back of her harness when her knees folded against the rail.

She tried to push him off with her left hand. “I have a wall at ten.” Cass unlatched Hollis’s harness himself and said, “I will take paid work from you, but I am not lifting you up there so you can fall where I can watch.” Her mouth flattened. “Then you don’t get paid.” “Probably not,” he said. Hollis stepped out of the basket, took the control puck from his palm, and walked past him into the rain-bright bay without putting it back on the charger.

At 7:18, Wren stood at the kitchen counter trying to peel an orange with her left hand while the city feed murmured from somebody's abandoned wall panel about lift access and public walls. Her mother's call pulsed across the counter. Wren let it ring twice before putting it on speaker.

Her mother said the storage service needed a destination for the canvases by Friday. Wren's right thumb twitched inside the gray brace as she reached to lower the volume. "You can leave them there," she said. When her mother asked whether the brace meant she had hurt herself, Wren looked directly at Ondine, who was rinsing a mug at the sink. "No. It is nothing," Wren said, and then, before her mother could offer the back room again, "I am not coming back."

The line went quiet. Ondine set the mug upside down on the rack and did not say Wren had been unable to turn a key that morning. After the call ended, Wren pushed the untouched orange toward the compost slot with her left wrist. Ondine took her coat from the chair and left it hanging there when she went upstairs.
