At 39th and Walnut, Denver Public Works has opened the first High Work Pool, bringing together sidewalk-clearance crews, insured lift time and brief safety orientations for independent painters, sign workers and small-building repair teams. Equipment is available in half-day bookings at the civic rate, rather than the commercial rental rate.

The program follows repeated complaints about a familiar mismatch: a four-storey wall could be commissioned cheaply, but reaching it required private insurance and a platform lease. The pool will not make overhead work painless. It gives smaller operators a staffed way up.

From the worldFresh North Fork Snow Buys Intake Crews a Quiet Weekenvironmental · front-range · magnitude 0.28

Fresh snow covered the higher North Fork country overnight after a narrow late-season system moved through, slowing the early melt that had started to darken the lower slopes. The snow is too localized to change Denver's summer assumptions, but it has given crews a quieter week at the channels and intake works.

Denver's flats saw little more than a hard gray morning. West of the city, the foothills carried a sudden, clean line of white.

News photograph: Horizon Archive Brings Back a Full Lunar-Night Record

tech · global · magnitude 0.61

The Horizon Archive transmitted its first complete record through a fourteen-day lunar night on Thursday. The distributed instrument field at the lunar south pole recorded thermal and seismic conditions through the long freeze without losing a station, giving planetary engineers their cleanest public baseline yet for equipment meant to stay in shadow for years.

The consortium behind Horizon said the result does not decide where permanent crews should live. It does make several proposed ice-edge sites less speculative, and the next construction window is expected to fill quickly.

At 6:41, Wren stood close enough to the red canvas that her shoulder brushed it. Her right hand stayed strapped under the gray brace against her ribs. With her left, she dragged a thin brush through the window area, making the reflected hand in the glass longer than a hand ought to be.

Ondine crossed the north hall with a coil of drying line over one shoulder. She had no camera. The studio door was open three inches. She stopped anyway. “That’s mine,” she said.

Wren put the brush in the solvent jar too hard. Red clouded the clear liquid. “It isn’t.” Ondine looked at the black ink crescent Wren had copied beneath the painted thumbnail, then at Wren’s uncovered left hand. “Then it doesn’t need my permission.” She went downstairs, taking the coil with her. Wren did not call after her. She painted over none of it.

At 6:18, Teo’s phone vibrated itself across the south-shop bench until it struck the coffee tin. Cass was tightening a clamp on the loose crosspiece when the transcription opened in Dennis’s blocky voice-text: SAW THE VIDEO. RAIL LOOKS SOUND. GAVE A MAN IN FORT COLLINS YOUR NUMBER. HE NEEDS A GATE.

Teo read it twice. Cass wiped metal dust down his jeans. “There,” he said. “He watched it.” Teo put the phone face down. Cass gave a short laugh that did not have much humor in it. “You’ll refuse the gate so he can’t accidentally mean something nice. That’s a pretty efficient system.”

Teo picked up the phone and called. Cass heard only the flat buzz before Teo said, “Don’t give my number out again,” and ended the call before Dennis could answer. He set the phone beside the bolts. “You don’t get to explain waiting to me,” he said. Cass stood with the clamp still in his hand, then put it down too hard and went out through the freight door into the cold runoff smell.
