Wren Could Not Keep Her Hand Out of the Frame
Wren spent the week trying to work around an injury that had already become visible. Her right hand was strapped against her ribs when she altered the reflected hand in the red canvas with her left; later she removed the brace and pressed the damaged thumb into the work until the painted window held a pale rubbed wound. The clinic packet stayed hidden under a rag only briefly. By Monday, she had a Friday Helix-9 assessment scheduled.
Ondine was present at each edge of that effort, and her attention ceased to feel neutral. Wren had already understood Ondine's photograph of a departing figure as an act of withholding disguised as mercy. Then Ondine left a print in the darkroom showing Wren months earlier, bare-handed at the north window, with the old thumb scar plainly there. It was not cropped; that was part of the injury. Wren's connection to Ondine ended that night. Nuri's six hundred toward the stand deposit removed one immediate financial hostage from Wren's work, but it did not restore the privacy Wren had lost or make the coming clinic visit less necessary.
