From the worldSun Valley Puts Precision Salvage Cutter Within Reach of Small Shopstech · denver · magnitude 0.28

A high-temperature salvage separation rig is now available for bookable evening runs at Sun Valley Exchange, which opened the facility Thursday. It is the exchange’s first shared precision cutter, intended for shops too small to own one. The machine can separate bonded rail steel and composite housings without reducing either to mixed scrap.

For its first month, the service will go to crews of fewer than five people. A materials steward will be assigned to every run. Independent fabricators described the setup as less glamorous than new stock, but much more useful: some discarded things can be made workable again.

From the worldNorth Fork Fences Keep Windblown Snow Above the Basinstech · front-range · magnitude 0.24

tech · front-range · magnitude 0.24

Three days of hard west wind put North Fork’s new modular snow fences to work above the upper collection basins. Intake crews said the fences held drifts that, on those slopes, would once have crossed the divide or sublimated from exposed ground. The amount of water retained is minor beside the basin’s summer demand, but it was enough to keep this week’s runoff estimate from slipping again.

The fences will remain until the next warm cycle. After that, the same slopes may be difficult for crews to reach. The water authority said the result does not change any assumptions about June yet.

In the houseNuri’s Inventory MessageNuri Alvear & Teodor "Teo" Vance · betrayal — working/strained · unclear/unspoken

between nuri-alvear and teo-vance — nuri-alvear: working/strained · teo-vance: unclear/unspoken · betrayal

At 6:40, Teo found Nuri at the long table beneath the dead skylight, with the shop ledger projected small against the concrete. Two lines glowed in the blue-white light: CASS—600, crossed through; INVENTORY—500, still open. Nuri had Cass’s message hovering over the figures: Why is Wren saying you paid her?

Teo set down his thermos. “Don’t explain it to me first.” Nuri looked at him once, then typed with both thumbs. Yes. I used the six hundred you left with me to pay Wren’s deposit. You did not tell me to. The five hundred in the inventory is separate. I have not touched it. They sent it before Teo could reach across the table, not that he did.

The receipt mark appeared under the message. Nuri put the tablet face down. “You can call him.” Teo picked up his thermos again. “No.” He moved toward the south shop, then stopped at the doorway. “And when he calls you an asshole, don’t make me explain why he’s wrong.” Nuri did not answer. The tablet began to ring against the tabletop after Teo had gone through the door.

between ondine-marsh and cass-oyelaran — ondine-marsh: working/ended · cass-oyelaran: working/ended · betrayal

At 9:42 that night, Cass stood in the darkroom with the five-hundred-credit receipt still open on his wrist screen. He had sent forty-eight credits to Wren with LIFT BOOTS in the note, then pushed the rest into the rent portal. The red cure line remained beneath the partial payment. On the drying line above the trays, the loading-bay frame showed him bent beside Hollis’s crates.

He took a key from his pocket and dragged it once across the negative. The emulsion went pale from his shoulder to the edge of the loading door. Ondine came in carrying a sealed canister and stopped before she set it down.

“You could have asked me to take it down,” she said.

“No.” He made a second scratch, shorter. “You’d keep the one where I asked.”

She looked at the ruined frame, then at the rent portal’s red balance reflected in the black tray. “Then we’re finished, Cass—not just the sheets.”

Cass put the key back in his pocket. “There wasn’t anything else.” Ondine did not reach for the negative. She switched off the enlarger and left him with the red line on the screen.
