Cass took Saturday back, and Hollis refused to become an assistant
June heat had settled lightly over the rail district by morning, dry enough that the warehouse pipes clicked inside the brick while Teo cut flat bar at the shop table. Cass came downstairs in his old black boots to say Dennis Vance had put him back on Saturday. He made it sound like a shift change, though what he had reclaimed was the right to make a bad arrangement himself. Teo told him to count bolts, because he could not say that Dennis having Cass on the phone felt too much like losing a lever he had never meant to hold.
Before that, Hollis had stood at the loading-bay table unable to fasten the city loan harness alone. Her crew offered her assistant lead at the same rate while Mateo retained the decisions; they called it safety, and she heard demotion dressed as concern. She left rather than let the support measure her weakness for men already auditing it. Ondine kept her camera zipped and did not follow. That restraint was not repair, and Hollis did not mistake it for any.
Arizona’s July deadline on Denver’s protected small-user water window moved through the building as another version of the same question: who got called support, and who got made to pay for it. Cass answered with Flex Extension, Closed Valve, making the pipes’ stressed rattle refuse to resolve. Teo’s Guarantor Frame put its load plainly into steel. Hollis painted What the Roofline Keeps, a face interrupted by the wall’s own facts; Wren privately recognized the refusal in it and made The Second Buckle, an ordinary room with an empty chair that could not make help look clean. Nuri’s backlit Saturday Access, Provisional turned permission into a blank credential, while Ondine’s What Was Written on the Envelope kept every watermark and handling mark visible. Nobody answered the work aloud. Cass’s Saturday remained waiting at the end of the week, where Dennis’s name still was.
From the worldMural Crews Borrow Denver’s Lift Supports for Exterior Work
tech · denver · magnitude 0.32
On Wednesday, Denver’s exterior-work clinics began loaning powered shoulder supports and balance harnesses to independent mural crews. The equipment came from a city purchase made for bridge-inspection apprentices. It does not cure anything, and every crew must still pass a brief range-of-motion check. Clinic coordinators said the purpose was to keep pain from becoming the cost of public work.
Artists gathered for the first fittings beneath the viaduct near Brighton Boulevard, alongside lift operators and sign painters. Loans run for fourteen days and can be renewed after reassessment. Anonymous crews can apply through a sponsoring wall owner or an arts cooperative.

From the worldArizona Sets July Deadline on Denver Water-Loss Correction
political · front-range · arc: the-allocation · magnitude 0.58
Denver’s corrected conveyance-loss figure for Colorado’s protected small-user water windows will stand in Arizona only through the end of July, the Lower Basin office said Wednesday. After that, Arizona will require a joint review of the threshold. The correction has allowed studios, laundries and other small daytime users to avoid the overnight schedule placed on Denver’s largest customers.
Denver characterized the deadline as negotiating pressure, not a hydrological finding. Its water staff said small users would not be shifted into overnight competition while the independent panel continues its work. Larger Front Range shops, already paying for night rotations, moved at once to demand part of the protected window.

From the worldMhlaba Completes Cape Meridian’s First Winter Cargo Run

tech · global · magnitude 0.63
Mhlaba, Cape Meridian Freight’s uncrewed heavy-lift vessel, reached Walvis Bay from Durban on Wednesday with modular desalination hardware and replacement turbine blades aboard. It was the first commercial voyage on the company’s southern African coastal line. West of Port Elizabeth, the vessel endured a three-day storm sequence without a crew transfer or an escort.
Cape Meridian said fortnightly service could start in August, provided port unions and insurers accept the voyage record. Coastal labor federations did not oppose the trial. They said the line’s savings must support shore maintenance, dispatch and emergency-response jobs, rather than become an argument for cutting them.

In the houseDennis Vance’s Saturday Reinstatement
between cass-oyelaran and teo-vance — cass-oyelaran: friendship/strained · teo-vance: friendship/unspoken · family
At 7:06, Teo was cutting a length of flat bar at the shop table, the saw whining through his plugs, when Cass came down the stairs in his old black work boots. One lace dragged loose behind him. He stood just outside the line of metal filings until Teo killed the blade.
“Dennis put me back on Saturday,” Cass said. His voice was too level. “I called him. Like a person who can use a phone.” Teo wiped both hands on his trousers and looked past Cass toward the stairs. “You blocked him.” “I unblocked him. I did not marry the number.” Cass bent, tied the loose lace hard enough to whiten his knuckles. “He tried your name once. I told him the first time he asks me about you, I hang up.”
Teo picked up the bar and set it in the scrap bin instead of returning it to the bench. “Then count bolts,” he said. Cass gave one short laugh that did not reach anywhere useful. “That was always the plan.” He went back upstairs without asking whether Teo believed him. Teo let the saw remain off.

between ondine-marsh and hollis-amaya — ondine-marsh: rivalry/ended · hollis-amaya: rivalry/ended · work
At 6:18, Hollis stood at the loading-bay worktable with the city loan harness open in its foam case. Its shoulder frame was clean enough to look medical. She had one strap across her chest and could not quite reach the second buckle with her right hand. Ondine came down the stairs, saw the call hovering above the table, and stopped beside the freight door with her camera bag closed against her hip.
The foreman’s voice came through the table speaker, careful in the way people got when they had already voted. The crew would take the loan support. They would also keep lift layout, paint order, and final safety calls with Mateo until Hollis had a full unrestricted week. “We can put you down as assistant lead,” he said. “Same day rate.” Hollis looked at the harness’s little range-of-motion indicator, then at the concrete. “Then you have an assistant-shaped hole,” she said, and cut the call before he could soften it.
She pulled the half-fastened strap over her head with her left hand and shoved the harness back into its case. Ondine did not move toward the table. “You could have worn it,” she said. Hollis gave a short laugh that did not reach anywhere. “So it can tell them exactly how much of me is broken?” She snapped the case shut, took her keys, and passed Ondine without looking at the bag. Ondine remained by the freight door until the stairwell door closed below.
