From the worldNight Cooling Yards Give Denver Crews Somewhere to Put the Heatcivic · denver · magnitude 0.29

Denver has opened three cooling and supply yards after Wednesday’s record heat, allowing exterior workers to use them after dark. One is at the viaduct site near Brighton Boulevard. The yards provide chilled water, shoulder and hand scans, shaded staging for lifts, and a place to wait through the hottest hours without giving up a permitted workday.

The city calls the arrangement a July trial. Mural crews, roofers, and small repair outfits filled the first reservation blocks within an hour. Crews can still work during the day; the immediate difference is that those without private cooling space have somewhere to put the middle of it.

Kestrel-9, a tug operated by the Pacific Orbital Service Cooperative, has captured a twelve-year-old communications relay that was drifting through a crowded geostationary service corridor. The relay’s original operator declined repair, and the tug directed it into a controlled disposal orbit.

The removal opened two long-delayed slots for weather and emergency-mesh satellites serving Pacific island states. It was the cooperative’s first complete corridor clearance under its shared-liability charter. Insurers and smaller launch operators, which cannot afford recovery fleets of their own, had been watching the test closely.

At 11:14, the north studio had gone blue around the windows, though the brick still pushed heat into the room. Teo was at the worktable scraping old adhesive off a salvaged plate when Wren’s call connected behind him. Her mother’s voice came thinly from the phone, asking whether the shelving ought to be moved before July.

Wren stood beside the lease projection with one hand flat on its red total. “Don’t clear the back room,” she said. She listened, her mouth tightening. “I said I’m not coming in July.” Then she ended the call before her mother could finish. Teo put the scraper down. Wren looked at the projected balance instead of him. “It’s eleven-forty. Cass’s six hundred isn’t in it. It doesn’t get to be in it.”

“I know,” Teo said.

She finally faced him. “You’re my friend, but don’t make a plan for me.” The ventilation fan knocked once in its housing. Teo nodded, once, and picked the scraper back up. “All right.” Wren left the lease projection open when she crossed to her easel.
