Cass swept the cable labels into his sound case with the flat of his hand. “Fine,” he said. “I’ll call Dennis and put myself back on.” Teo said, “Then don’t come downstairs afterward.” Cass held his gaze a second too long, then shouldered the case and left through the freight door, letting it strike the jamb hard enough to shake the hanging cups.

Ondine came in for the tap water, saw her own name on Nuri’s tablet, and stopped with the glass under the spout. “They made that automatic,” Nuri said. “Convenient.” Ondine set the glass down dry. “You can leave it.” Nuri looked at her, then tapped the small red removal mark beside MARSH, ONDINE. The name vanished. “You do not get to be my proof that I learned anything.”

Ondine’s hand went to the camera bag at her hip and stayed there. “I wasn’t going.” Nuri reopened the deck, enlarged the ugly source-history page, and began marking where they would have to talk through it aloud. Ondine filled her glass, drank, and left the kitchen without looking at the screen again.
