Six finalists will bring their work to Denver’s rebuilt Platte path next week after the Civic Visions panel selected them for the riverfront wayfinding commission. It is the first municipal image package to require public displays of working drafts, rather than finished simulations alone. Nuri Alvear’s Denver—clean terraces, empty pedestrian bridges and impossible blue shade—is among the six.

The commission is small by the city’s standards. Its three-year municipal studio contract is not, at least not to the artists waiting on the next call. The credential attached to the award is the sort that changes who answers.

Wren had only come down for turpentine. She stopped when she saw the line in the submitted form: SUBJECT CONSENT ATTESTATION — UNAVAILABLE.

“You sent it,” Wren said. Ondine dried her hands on her jeans instead of turning around. “This morning.” The next field said the work could remain in the contested-subject record but could not enter the new verified-human registry or be licensed through its partner galleries. Wren read it twice. “You could have asked me.” Ondine faced her then. “For permission to say you did not give it?” Wren’s fingers closed around the turpentine bottle until the cap squeaked. “You keep finding ways to make the room belong to you.”

“I marked it unavailable,” Ondine said. “I am not changing it.” Wren looked at the black square of the terminal camera, then at Ondine’s empty hands. “That isn’t leaving me alone.” Ondine did not say that it was. Wren set the turpentine back on the shelf too hard, glass knocking glass, and left without it. Ondine waited until the freight door upstairs shut before she covered the trays.

Cass was in the doorway with his sound case against his shin. He looked at the wall unit, then at Teo’s face. “He called you to brag?” Teo said. “Cancel it.” Cass’s mouth tightened. “I already took Saturday. I can pay you from wages.”

“You said you were done using him.” Teo pulled off one glove finger by finger. Cass did not step farther into the shop. “I said I was done using him to get to you.” Teo said Dennis would make it the same thing anyway. Cass lifted the case and turned toward the freight hall. “Only if you keep paying my bills.” He left Teo with the unfinished message blinking on the wall.
