Cass lost the sale that might have carried him to Saturday
June heat sat inside the warehouse long after dark, caught in the brick and the crooked darkroom duct, while the protected process-water ran shallow along the rail district curbs. Cassius "Cass" Oyelaran stood at Ondine Marsh’s doorway with a resale notice glowing in his hand: his speakers had not sold, because the broker had frozen his account over suspected coordinated bidding and erased the replacement listing with it. He blamed Dennis aloud, but what hurt was having no remaining way to make his need look like a transaction. Ondine told him he should not be there, then deliberately left her camera bag untouched. Cass told her not to make herself the person he might ask; he wanted the sentence to free them both, though her refusal to wound or rescue him made it feel more final.
They had all been talking about Cheyenne and Albuquerque refusing Denver’s reserve vote without authority to offer their own seasonal advice, because the argument made an ugly kind of sense in a building where Teodor "Teo" Vance had already told Cass not to set an alarm for Saturday. It was a boundary, not an attack, but Cass felt the missing shift as money taken directly from his hand. Teo made Saturday, With One Foot Clear, a steel structure that admitted its uneven burden. Cass made No Alarm Set for Saturday, letting vibration haunt an empty marked space. Wren Abadi painted The Room Charged to Everyone, finding obligation most plainly in hands; she thought Cass’s humiliation had spread through the room because nobody knew how to touch it. Hollis Amaya’s Hands Larger Than the Windows held its wall with more confidence than her shoulder felt. Nuri Alvear’s Families for Scale, Riverfront Vision made exclusion look seductively civic, which Nuri privately recognized too well. Ondine’s Operating Recommendation, North Kitchen recorded cups, chairs, runoff, and her own shadow: proof, she knew, was never neutral. No one said what Cass would do when Saturday arrived.
From the worldCheyenne and Albuquerque Refuse Denver’s Reserve Vote Without Their Own Seasonal Advice
political · denver · arc: the-compact · magnitude 0.68
A recorded reserve vote is not enough, Cheyenne and Albuquerque said Wednesday. Neither city will send voting delegates to the July dispatch table unless its hydrologists can issue an independent operating recommendation alongside Denver’s, the cities said in a joint statement. They said Denver’s offer would leave them without meaningful authority over seasonal diversions.
Denver’s water office said it would consider the proposal but warned that divided operational authority could slow releases when runoff changes quickly. The protected June recovery windows in the lower rail district remain in place for now. The dispute is about who can decide whether those windows are fair once the summer schedule tightens.

From the worldNamibia’s Desert Link Begins Sending Stored Solar Power Across Southern Africa at Night

tech · global · magnitude 0.7
The first full section of Namibia’s desert grid link went live Wednesday, carrying stored solar power from the Erongo coast into the southern African intertie after sunset. High-temperature storage fields feed transmission hardware that can route around damaged spans and keep neighboring regions from losing power.
Within hours, utilities in Botswana, South Africa and Zambia were taking their scheduled night capacity. Backers described the project as the first regional grid designed on the premise that cheap generation is plentiful; dependable delivery is the more difficult part.

From the worldOslo Court Blocks Ad Using Reconstructed Voice of Dead Singer Liv Bjerke
cultural · national · magnitude 0.55
A beverage company cannot release its campaign featuring a reconstructed singing voice of the late Norwegian vocalist Liv Bjerke, an Oslo commercial court ruled. Her earlier recording contracts allowed neither persuasive synthetic performances after her death nor the campaign built around one, the court found.
Bjerke’s estate can still license archival recordings, but not a newly generated voice model. Labels and estates throughout Europe had followed the case. Its narrow separation of a recording from a performance could change how dead artists are marketed.

At 11:18 p.m., the darkroom fan worried the heat out through its crooked duct while Ondine rinsed a strip of negatives. Cass stood in the doorway with his work shirt dark at both armpits, staring at the resale terminal in his hand. The broker had marked his account for review: suspected coordinated bidding, sales suspended pending inquiry. His replacement listing had disappeared with it.
“You should not be in here,” Ondine said. She did not reach for the camera bag under the enlarger.
Cass gave a laugh that did not last. “Dennis gets to make a nuisance of himself and suddenly nobody will buy my speakers.” He swiped at the notice, missed, and held the terminal still against his thigh. “Before you say it, don’t. I am done making you the person I might ask.”
Ondine set the dripping negative in its rack. “I wasn’t going to.”
“I know.” He looked at her then, not at the bag. “That’s different.” He closed the notice and walked out before the fan could cover the sound of his boots on the concrete.
