On Sunday, Riverfront Designs issued each of the six South Platte Promenade finalists a 3,000-credit production retainer. The funds cover fabrication, transport and three permitted dusk-bay sessions, so those expenses do not have to appear as speculative bid costs. Riverfront said the arrangement was meant to keep smaller studios from being outmatched by firms that could pay for polished prototypes themselves.

Before the final selection in July, every team must present its work under the river lighting. Proposals built mainly for rendering must use the retainer for physical display work too, not only for the images that earned them a shortlist place.

At Wall Commons, borrowers have begun evening fittings for the depot's six new shared force-assist rigs. Each person completes a short overhead-motion calibration before taking a rig out. At 8:11 p.m., Teo stood at the loading-bay worktable stripping copper from a length of salvaged cable. Heat still clung to the concrete despite the open freight door. Cass came in from the alley with his jacket folded over one arm, dressed too neatly for the warehouse, and set his phone face-down beside Teo’s pliers.

The phone vibrated itself onto its edge. Teo saw Dennis Vance’s name before Cass caught it. Cass’s hand stopped over the screen. “Don’t,” he said. Teo put the cable down. “What did he freeze?” Cass looked past him, through the open door at the dead rails shining under the street lamps. “It’s handled.” “Cass.” He gave a short laugh with no amusement in it. “That word means something different when you say it.”

Teo did not reach for the phone. “Is Saturday the price?” Cass’s mouth tightened. Then he turned the screen over and read the line once more without opening it. “He said Saturday alone, and he said he releases it after.” Teo’s shoulders went still. “That isn’t a shift.” “It pays like one.” Cass slid the phone into his pocket. Teo looked at the copper strands spread across the table, then back at Cass. “I’m not canceling you again.” Cass nodded as if that was what he had needed, though it plainly was not. He left the bay door open behind him.

At 9:18, the freight bay smelled of hot brick and the citrus solvent somebody had used on the lift boots. Hollis stood under the borrowed force-assist rig with its right sleeve bunched at her elbow, trying to pull her arm backward through the release loop. The little motor whined, then stopped. Her face went blank before she could arrange it otherwise.

Wren was scraping a dry edge off one of the 38th Avenue panels. “You don’t have to demonstrate it,” she said. Hollis gave a short, ugly laugh. “Demonstrate what?” Wren looked at the sleeve, not at her. “That it’s fine.” From the hall, Ondine appeared with a basket of washed contact sheets, saw the rig, and kept both hands where they were. Hollis let the release loop fall against her hip. “It’s a tear,” she said. “Rotator. I haven’t made the appointment.”

Ondine went past them to the darkroom without opening the camera bag at her shoulder. Hollis watched Wren return the scraper to its tin. “That woman,” Hollis said, nodding at the panel’s red-backed figure. “What is she turning her back on?” Wren’s thumb left a pale streak through the solvent dust. “The place that keeps calling her home,” she said. Hollis waited. Wren swallowed. “And herself, a little.” Hollis did not say it was good or brave. She only bent her left arm around the rig’s waist strap and said, “All right.”
