Cass’s Debt Asked Wren to Sign, and Dennis Answered the Phone
Cass Oyelaran spent the week learning that a debt could keep finding new doors into the house. It was there in the recorder work, in the clinic’s instructions for his left ear, and in the responses Wren Abadi and Hollis Amaya made to his work: Cass had become unusually audible to the people around him, even as he tried to make himself smaller. Wren’s reply to “No Alarm Set for Saturday” named what she could hear in the piece—the room’s borrowed weight, left behind for everyone else.
For a brief interval on June 15, the house record marked Wren and Cass as together. Then the flex-extension request put Wren’s name forward as a household guarantor without her knowledge. The reversal was immediate and unsurprising: what Cass had wanted contained had again enlisted somebody else. By the end of the week he had called Dennis Vance and been reinstated for Saturday work, presenting the fact to Teo in the flat calm of someone determined to call dependence a practical arrangement. Teo did not make it into an argument. The silence between them was its own answer.
