Artists who do not want to keep or release studio footage, drafts, location traces, or other process records will have another option at six Denver Quiet Galleries. On Saturday, the galleries said they would accept a dated peer-witness record for human-made work, following weeks of collector pressure for more intimate evidence of authorship.

The arrangement calls for named witnesses, a sealed custody statement, and an in-person inspection of the completed work. Private process, the galleries said, will not be required for a sale. Larger certifiers have not followed suit, and some buyers called the system too easy to manipulate. The galleries' reply was that verification should work without taking an artist's life along with it.

From the worldSmall Workshops Get Two More Weeks of Scheduled Coolingenvironmental · front-range · magnitude 0.31

Registered small workshops will receive afternoon cooling releases from the Clear Creek thermal bank through the first two weeks of August. The extension follows a trial this week that kept older commercial spaces below the shutdown threshold. It amounts to four weekday hours, with no promise beyond the listed district, but gives tenants something unusual in hot weather: a window they can schedule around.

Large recovery plants can still purchase steadier capacity, and the bank cautioned that a prolonged heat dome would cut the release. For now, tool rooms, repair shops, and studios along the lower industrial corridors are moving hot work into the fixed period instead of cancelling it.

The container vessel Nia Mbele was pulled clear of Mombasa's reef channel early Saturday by three autonomous harbor tugs. Kenyan port officials said the disabled ship might otherwise have caused the port's worst grounding in decades. Steering failed during an outbound turn with 3,100 containers aboard; the crew kept control while the tugs took the tow.

The channel reopened to traffic after six hours. The rescue is likely to sharpen a dispute already underway at East African ports: whether autonomous salvage fleets belong as publicly chartered infrastructure or should remain with the freight alliances able to afford them.

At 4:36 p.m., the south darkroom was cool enough to raise gooseflesh on Ondine’s forearms. The workshop cooling had come on early, rattling through the old duct above the trays. A single wet print hung from the line: torn cream paper, three jagged seams, Dennis Vance’s name in the address block and, below it, the sentence Ondine had reconstructed from the scraps.

Teo stopped in the doorway. He did not ask what it was. He took the clothespins off one by one, carried the print to the sink, and opened the tap. Ondine stepped close enough that the water struck her knuckles too. “It was already destroyed,” she said. “You destroyed it.”

“The letter was.” His thumb held the paper flat as its black edges feathered into the drain. He looked at her only after Dennis’s handwriting had gone soft and unreadable. “You didn’t save it for me. You saved it so you could be the one who knew.” Ondine said nothing. Behind her, on the contact ledger’s open page, the negative sleeve lay tucked beneath a list of dates. Teo shut off the water and left the ruined print in the sink without touching it again.

At 3:12, the cooling release had made the freight bay merely hot instead of punishing. Nuri sat at the long table with the municipal commission deck open, moving a blue drainage line one stubborn millimeter at a time. Wren stood at the Wall Commons panel with August spread between her hands. Hollis came in carrying a roll of masking paper under her left arm. Her right stayed close to her ribs.

“Is the third still blank?” Hollis asked. Wren said yes. “Put my name back.” Wren’s thumb hovered once, then pressed RESTORE. The calendar accepted Hollis Amaya, elevation test, ten to noon. No note appeared beside it. Nuri looked over, then back at the drainage line.

Hollis set the masking paper down. “What were you trying to save?” Wren kept looking at the returned square. For a few seconds the vent above them rattled and Nuri’s stylus clicked. Then Wren said, “The part where you fail in front of people.” Hollis’s mouth tightened, not kindly. “That part is still mine.” Wren nodded. She did not touch the booking again. Nuri closed the commission deck without saving the last millimeter.
