From the worldDenver Loses Arizona’s Overnight Water Exchange for July
political · front-range · arc: the-allocation · magnitude 0.57
Denver’s protected daytime deliveries will still receive Colorado’s settled base flow. But Arizona’s allocation authority said Monday that it would not honor the discretionary overnight exchange window the city has been using to balance those deliveries this month, leaving Denver’s recovery-hour plan more costly and less adaptable.
Denver called the decision retaliation for Arizona’s walkout from the July talks. Arizona called it routine schedule discipline while negotiations are suspended. The wording differed; the position did not. Neither side treated the measure as permanent.

From the worldNeighborhood Shops Can Now Take Home Steel From the Retired Viaduct
economic · denver · magnitude 0.34
Two supervised cutting bays opened Monday at North Metro Salvage, giving the first neighborhood buyers a way to reserve steel from the retired viaduct, have it cut to transit limits and leave with it the same day. Small fabricators no longer have to pay for commercial-haul lots.
What is available first is scarred plate, angle and short lengths of rail-side channel—not display-grade stock. The material is inexpensive enough to help independent shops, but irregular enough that nobody will confuse it with new steel.

From the worldKuroshio Grid Begins Holding Daylight Power Beneath Shikoku

tech · global · magnitude 0.68
Off Shikoku, Japan’s Kuroshio Grid has brought a commercial deepwater thermal-storage system online. It uses the difference between warm surface water and the cold Pacific below to move afternoon generation into the evening peak. The operator said the first module can supply roughly 1.8 million homes for four summer hours without imported fuel.
Fisheries negotiations and seabed permitting delayed the plant twice. Now that it is connected, similar proposals are expected to return along warm-current coasts, where inexpensive power is plentiful but difficult to keep after sunset.

In the houseAmaya’s Six-Week Tear
between cass-oyelaran and hollis-amaya — cass-oyelaran: working/strained · hollis-amaya: working/strained · body
At 9:17 p.m., Cass knelt on the freight-bay concrete with a speaker stand shortened to its lowest notch. The overnight-water notice pulsed blue on the utility panel behind him. Hollis came down the stairs with an ice sleeve wrapped under the cuff of her right arm and stopped before the taped rectangle he had marked on the floor.
“Service walk,” he said. “No lift. No catwalk. You hear the return from here.”
She looked at the low speaker, then at him. “It’s a partial tear.” Cass’s fingers stopped on the clamp. “Six weeks, no overhead.” He looked up too quickly. “So I add it to the six hundred?” Hollis gave one hard, unbelieving breath through her nose. “Six weeks, no overhead—and you do not get to turn that into the six hundred.”
Cass tightened the clamp until the metal clicked. “Riverfront gets what you tell them.” Hollis shifted the ice sleeve higher with her left hand. “Seven o’clock. Service walk.” She left him the taped rectangle and did not tell him what the clinic had said after that.

In the houseAlvear’s Two Emails
between teo-vance and nuri-alvear and wren-abadi — teo-vance: working/ended · nuri-alvear: working/strained · betrayal
At 6:17, the kitchen cooled around the half-open freight door. A water-exchange bulletin crawled silently over the wall panel while Wren scraped a palette knife clean at the sink. Nuri stood at the table with their municipal deck shut beneath both hands. Teo came in from the loading bay, saw the two new messages waiting in his inbox, and did not sit down.
He read the first one standing. Then the second. His jaw moved once, hard. Nuri said, “I opened Dennis’s letter, and I took out the red support because it looked better without it.” Wren stopped scraping. Teo looked at Nuri rather than the messages. “You don’t get to make either one clean by putting it in a sentence.”
“No,” Nuri said. “I know.” They slid the deck under their arm and went toward the hall. Teo did not tell them to stay, and did not tell them to take the emails back. At the sink, Wren wiped red paint from the blade until the rag went dark.
