Cass and Wren Made the Warehouse a Matter of Record
Cass Oyelaran began the week carrying Wren Abadi’s repaired lift boot into a clinic and stopping himself from retrieving the peg she dropped. Wren’s thumb could not finish the small turns the clinician asked of it; later, with the splint off, she sat before Cass’s playback board and let a South Platte culvert occupy the north studio. Neither of them had found a clean way to call this care. Cass’s remittance for the Transit Presence Program, discovered during the hail, made the question of what he could still afford sharper rather than clearer.
Sun Valley Land Commons offered the rail district a version of security: capped five-year leases in bays newly removed from speculation, costly but legible. Cass tried to put that security around Wren by beginning an application with both their names. Wren found the application contested, understood that someone had made her household into a disputed fact, and answered with a correction that struck Cass’s name through. By Wednesday, the playback cable was what Cass said he had come for; the open confirmation band told the real story. What had begun as an attempt to keep someone upright became a declaration of who was permitted to stand beside whom.
