Cass’s debt could not be paid without being used
Cass Oyelaran spent the week discovering that every available payment came with somebody else’s claim attached. He sent Teo Vance two hundred fifty credits in the west bay, only to have Dennis Vance’s voice arrive in the kitchen asking whether an image was current, as though Cass’s relay and Teo’s work were still doors Dennis could open. By Saturday Dennis had made the offer explicit: six hundred credits could go directly to Hollis Amaya if Cass would certify Teo’s lobby frame as a Vance commission made at the warehouse. Teo received the affidavit; Cass had brought the pressure across the yellow line again.
The money Cass had expected from Riverfront did not become clean either. Its four hundred thirty-eight credits were held for a full provenance comparison. Wren Abadi, who had briefly been alongside him in the matter of Hollis’s balance, paid Hollis the six hundred herself. Cass heard that act as an accusation even if Wren did not offer it as one. On Tuesday he took away the field speaker whose room tone the comparison required. It was a withdrawal from the payment and from the evidence that might clear it. By week’s end, Teo was cold with him, Wren and Cass were strained, and Cass had protected himself from Dennis’s bargain by making another loss for himself.
