From the worldThree Cities Put Overnight Water Settlements on One Clockpolitical · denver · arc: the-compact · magnitude 0.61

Beginning next month, Denver, Cheyenne and Albuquerque will record their overnight water-exchange settlements on a shared Mountain Time ledger. The three cities agreed Friday to end the staggered cutoffs that allowed a shortage to show up on one municipal clock and vanish on another. Their individual allocations remain unchanged, but a missed delivery will be visible to all three before the morning market opens.

Arizona’s compact office called the arrangement a pressure tool designed by Denver and said Phoenix would not follow the timing without a wider discussion of allocations. Denver officials called it the smallest common rule the cities could establish while the Arizona exchange remains withheld under the city-state’s temporary backstop.

From the worldWall Commons Lends Counterweight Rigs to Independent Crewstech · denver · magnitude 0.37

Independent exterior crews working above the second storey can now reserve portable counterweight rigs through Denver’s Wall Commons. The commons opened its first pool Friday, offering the low-power rail-and-harness assemblies alongside the city’s paid night-work slots. The rigs reduce part of a painter’s overhead load without locking the crew to one place on the wall.

The program came from injury-pool data gathered this summer and costs nothing for crews without a corporate maintenance contract. It cannot repair damaged shoulders, but it can reduce the number of times a wall demands the same reach.

News photograph: Moon Array Captures Earth’s Magnetic Wake in Resolved Image

A far-side lunar array has produced the first resolved low-frequency image of Earth’s magnetic wake, the International Lunar Radio Consortium said Friday. The Moon’s bulk blocks the radio noise that has hidden the signal from ground stations and near-Earth orbit. The image came after two days of synchronized operation, following the array’s first light.

Researchers said the observation will let space-weather forecasters watch the wake change shape during solar storms instead of inferring those changes from scattered orbital instruments. On Friday morning, the consortium released the raw observation set to member universities and weather services.

At 6:12 in the downstairs kitchen, Cass stood at the sink scraping burned coffee from a small pan while his palm terminal spoke in Dennis Vance’s patient, clean voice. The freight door at the far end of the room was open two inches against the heat. Teo came in for the ice bin and stopped when he heard his own name.

“Was that image current?” Dennis asked. Cass kept his eyes on the black water circling the drain. “The photograph was yesterday, and he was working on it here.” A pale confirmation opened over his wrist: 400.00, pending release. Cass pressed his thumb to accept before he looked up. Teo had the ice bin hanging from one hand. “You had to tell him that?” Cass set the pan down too hard. “He asked a question. He paid for an answer.”

Teo put the ice bin on the counter without filling it. “Don’t call me your enemy either,” he said. Cass’s mouth had already shaped a reply, something quick and mean, but Teo went on. “I’d have to know you for that.” He left the bin there and walked back toward the bay. Cass watched the payment settle from pending to clear, then turned the terminal face-down beside the wet pan.

At 7:06, the darkroom fan worried at the warm chemical air. Ondine set her phone on the dry counter and played Rosa Ibarra’s message without looking at Nuri. Rosa’s voice came thin through the speaker: “Keep the negative if that’s what you do. Don’t print me. Don’t show me. Don’t sell me. And don’t make it part of whatever they’re building.”

Nuri stood in the doorway with a roll of municipal plot paper under one arm. “My packet gets none of her,” they said. “Not the image. Not the conversation. Not her name.”

Ondine took the drainage-cut sleeve from the tray rack. Her pencil made a hard, tearing sound on the glassine: ROSA IBARRA — KEEP NEGATIVE / NO PRINT, DISPLAY, SALE, OR PACKET. Nuri watched her write KEEP first. “That isn’t mercy,” they said. Ondine capped the pencil. “No,” she said. “It’s the record.” Nuri left the plot paper unrolled and shut the door carefully behind them.
