From the worldClear Creek Extends Cooling for Small Workshops by Spending Its Reserve
tech · front-range · arc: the-reservoir · magnitude 0.62
The heat ridge is now forecast to last beyond the August 8 protection date. On Friday, Clear Creek’s thermal bank said small workshops would keep their daytime cooling blocks through August 11. To cover them, the bank will move more commercial recovery into overnight hours and use a reserve set aside for late-summer municipal demand.
Kiln rooms, print shops, repair bays and other low-margin spaces can keep operating through the hottest part of the day. The tradeoff is less capacity later in the month if the ridge persists, an exchange fails or demand rises suddenly.

From the worldAfter Nine Years Below the Pass, Continental Rail Starts Cascade Freight Service
tech · national · magnitude 0.74
Two autonomous freight consists went through the Cascade Freight Bore on Friday, marking Continental Rail’s opening of the route beneath the pass between eastern Washington and Puget Sound. Excavation, ventilation work and seismic testing took nine years. For most overnight cargo, the bore replaces the weather-prone mountain line and shortens the Seattle-to-interior run by nearly six hours.
Food, machine parts and recycled structural metal made up the first westbound manifests; port containers traveled east. Passenger trains will remain on the old line. The cooperative said it would keep that route for regional service and emergency use.

From the worldJakarta Puts Its Rebuilt Northern Coast on a Tidal Transit Network

tech · global · magnitude 0.79
On Friday, the Jakarta Delta Authority brought its tidal transit grid into service. Twenty-three rebuilt northern-coast stations now connect to a moving seawall, ferry and storage network built to work through daily flood cycles instead of closing against them. During the first full-service morning, more than a million riders traveled between outer housing districts and central employment zones.
Sediment failures and disputes over relocation rights had delayed the project repeatedly. The opening does not resolve Jakarta’s water problem, but it gives the city a transport system that can continue operating as the coast rises around it.

In the houseAlvear’s Contested Source
between teo-vance and nuri-alvear — teo-vance: working/ended · nuri-alvear: rivalry/unspoken · betrayal
At eight forty, heat still held in the loading bay concrete. Teo came down for the hose clamp by the freight door and found Nuri seated on an overturned paint bucket, their panel bright across their knees. The red bracket sat behind the transit shelter, less cleaned-up than yesterday now: a thin black label crossed it—CONTESTED SOURCE, OBSERVED WITHOUT PERMISSION.
“You made it a caption,” Teo said. Nuri did not look up. “I made it a problem they have to decide.” Their thumb stayed over the submission field. “I can take it out.” Teo set the clamp on the floor. “Then take it out.”
Nuri pressed SUBMIT. The receipt blinked green, then vanished into the commission queue. “I left it in, and I told them it was yours.” Teo watched the empty screen a moment. “Risking the job doesn’t make it clean.” Nuri folded the tablet shut. “No,” they said. “It makes it mine.” Teo picked up the clamp and went back inside without saying whether that was worse.
