On Thursday, six Denver witness galleries started a shared independent custody ledger for works presented under the city’s witness-only protocol. An entry begins at the threshold, naming the witness and recording the work’s physical condition, the sealed handoff in transport, and its eventual sale or return. The ledger does not include studio footage, process feeds, or inventories of artists’ rooms.

Conservators, couriers, and the galleries built the compromise after the Pacific Authorship Registry determined that witness statements by themselves could not cross state lines. The opening entries covered paintings, prints, and a sound object. The registry has not said whether the arrangement satisfies its California-backed standard.

Workers who spend their shifts with their arms above shoulder height can now use after-hours motion bays opened by a Front Range orthopedic cooperative in Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs. The cooperative serves wall crews, glaziers, arborists, riggers, and sign painters, combining live load imaging with braces the same night, nerve assessments, and referrals for regenerative repair when requested.

The program was designed for independent crews that cannot readily give up a daylight shift for an appointment, the cooperative said. Exterior workers may book anonymously with their injury-pool credentials or walk in during the final two hours of the night-work window.

At 9:40, the west bay smelled of hot steel and the rain that had failed somewhere north of Commerce City. Teo had his back to the freight door, grinding a burr from the corner of the unfinished lobby frame. Cass stood beyond the yellow line with his palm raised, the frame squared inside the camera’s thin blue guide.

The grinder stopped. Teo turned in his face shield and saw the send confirmation vanish from Cass’s hand. “Who did you send that to?”

Cass put the hand down too late. “Don’t do that voice.” Teo lifted the shield. On Cass’s palm, a receipt still glowed: VANCE INDUSTRIAL, 250.00. Cass glanced at it, then at Teo. “He paid me two-fifty for the photograph, Teo. I took it.” Teo set the grinder on the bench with care. “Stay out of my bay.” Cass gave a short laugh, but he stepped backward over the yellow line and did not come back in.

At 9:18, the utility sink ran a thin recycled stream over Hollis’s paint rollers. The feed on the old wall display had its sound off, but its caption kept changing beneath footage of fluorescent motion bays: NIGHT CLINICS FOR OVERHEAD CREWS. Hollis reached for the roller rack with her right hand. Her fingers closed around nothing. The roller hit the concrete and left a dark green comma by her boot.

Wren came down from the north studio carrying a jar of solvent rags. She stopped when Hollis put her useless hand flat against the sink lip. “Did you go?” Wren asked. Hollis gave a short laugh that did not have anything in it. “You don’t get to audit me.” Then she watched the green water circle the drain and said, “I didn’t go Friday. I sat in the lot until they locked the intake and then I drove home.”

Wren’s thumb pressed once against the seam of the rag jar. “All right,” she said. She did not take out her phone. Hollis looked at her then, suspicious of the empty space where advice ought to have been. “Don’t make that face.” “I’m not making a face.” “Sit down until this stops,” Hollis said. Wren set the jar on the floor and sat with her back to the washing machine while Hollis waited for her fingers to belong to her again.
